The GANDOLFI VARIANT, totally new in concept, yet bringing together all the accumulated skills of a century making. PATENTED MOVEMENTS GANDOLFI VARIANT, the first completely new design in fifty years. Not replacing but adding to the superbly crafted PRECISION range of Gandolfi cameras. YAW FREE MOVEMENTS
GANDOLFI VARIANT, a field camera with the yaw-free movements of a top studio monorail.
A Studio camera with the portability of a field camera. When Gandolfi planned a new camera we
knew it had to be a major event. going back in the archives we found the first sale of a
GANDOLFI 8" x 10" PRECISION camera was made in 1943, and the fortunate purchaser was a
company called Fallowfield of London. With contineous detailed improvement this is the design on
which present-day cameras are based and sold the world over to discriminating professional
photographers for which portability is a must.
NOT JUST A NEW CAMERA
The GANDOLFI VARIANT is not simply a new Gandolfi, it is a whole new concept. It does not replace
the traditional PRECISION which remains in production as the world's finest example of camera
craftmanship. The GANDOLFI VARIANT brings technologically advanced materials and processes
to the craft. Each metal component is made from the optimum material for its purpose whether
stainless steel, nickel, brass or alluminium alloy. Bearing surfaces may be delrin or P.T.F.E.
bronze or brass depending on the application. The body-work is in resin bonded fibre with
selected hardwood reinforcement. The bellows attain their flexibility and hard wearing properties
from the most recently developed synthetic fabrics. The sheer variety of these materials calls for
specialized finishing technicques to produce an aesthetically satisfying whole. Finding the ideal
finish was helped by examining one of the rarest of the "PRECISION" models - the black French
polished wood and white metal version known as the "TECHNICAL" because it was favoured by
laborities and research establishments. The deep lustrous black ideally reflects today's
preference for under-statement and in the new GANDOLFI VARIANT this treatment is carried
through the visible metal parts with just sufficient relief to highlight a complex but very
satisfying and appealing design.
RESUME
This extemely functional and very attractive camera will appeal to the most discriminating of
photographers as a comprehensive single outfit or as a complimentary tool to fill out the
existing range. If a range of lenses is already available, we usually arrange for the GANDOLFI
VARIANT to take them. apart from the Universal back, we can also adapt your favourite roll film
holder and a number of specialised viewing devices and screens are also available. One further
point of increasing importance is that, although the GANDOLFI VARIANT is made for a life-time
of service, every part of it is re-usable or re-cycable and this beautiful black camera is just about
as 'green' as we can make it. For the professional photographer whether as the prime
instrument for the general worker, the ideal location camera for the traveller or as an
indispensable back-up for over-worked large format equipment, the GANDOLFI VARIANT will fulfil
every expectation and bring pleasure to master photographer and assistant alike.
AVAILABLE IN 3 MODELS
In fact the simplest VARIANT I can easily and economically be converted to VARIANT II or
VARIANT III if a changing work pattern dictates a different specification. Look at the
specifications but remember that all three variants will give the same image quality, the
difference is in image control. At the extremes a landscape worker will choose VARIANT I and
enjoy superb image quality with the minimum weight, bnulk and cost. With little penalty in
weight, bulk or cost the VARIANT II will satisfy all the image control needs of general field work
and location photography. The VARIANT III offers a greater range of movements than any
current field camera: its yaw-free tilts and swings, coupled with vast vertical and horizontal
shifts gives it the edge for product shots, large or small subjects, wide-angle or long focus lenses.
